AMERICUS —
Attend Americus-Sumter football practices and you’ll see Michael Pollock right in the middle of things.
And if you didn’t already know it, you might not be able to tell Pollock had an emergency appendectomy on Friday.
The first-year Panthers coach missed the team’s first game — a 28-7 win against Liberty County — and still hasn’t been cleared by doctors to go back full force.
“The doctor doesn’t want me doing anything for two weeks,” said Pollock. “I’ve got to take it easy, but I still have things to get done. The football season doesn’t end, and things don’t stop going. I’m trying to take it slow and get the bare necessities done.”
The Panthers are preparing for a trip to No. 4 Cook on Friday. Pollock said while he’s run the practices, he’s let the other coaches take on a bigger load, via doctor’s orders.
Pollock said he is still sore and is trying not to strain anything. He had back surgery in 2006 from a previous college injury and said the back pain was worse than that he’s feeling now.
“It’s not quite as bad as back pain, but it’s pretty durn close,” he said. “That’s the kind of pain you can’t get comfortable with, and you can’t find a position to lay down and sit.
“I was led to go to the emergency room before it erupted, and if I hadn’t, I’d be out for a while. I don’t want it to linger on. I don’t want to get into region play and still be dealing with it.”
The Panthers won last week in dominating fashion as coaches combined to call the offensive plays. Pollock plans to be at the game Friday as he makes a return trip to the only other school where he’s been a head coach.
“If I’m there, I’ll be calling the plays,” he said.
