The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets defeated their second nationally ranked team this season and extended their conference record to 8 – 0 with a 63 – 49 win over the 20th ranked National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Middle Georgia College Lady Warriors Tuesday. The Jets suffered a 77 – 59 loss in the second match-up of the night with the Middle Georgia Warriors.
South Georgia Technical College is the only unbeaten women’s team remaining in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association and they are ranked in first place. The Lady Jets have beaten Chipola and Middle Georgia College who were both ranked in the NJCAA Top 20 national rankings. The Lady Jets are 12 – 8 overall.
The Lady Jets and Middle Georgia College Lady Warriors swapped leads early in the first half, but South Georgia finally pulled ahead by as many as 11 points before ending the first half with a 29 – 20 lead.
In the second half, Middle Georgia pulled within six points of the Lady Jets, but South Georgia Tech took charge with about six minutes remaining to pull ahead by 14 points. The Lady Jets kept the pressure on Middle Georgia and wound up with a 63 – 49 victory.
Only two Lady Jets were in double-figures in the win over Middle Georgia. Shontae McCall, the 6’ 1” sophomore guard from Lynn Haven, Florida, led the Lady Jets with 28 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and seven assists. She was four of five in field goals and 20 of 22 from the free throw line.
She was joined in double-figures by Shanique Holston, a freshman from Reynolds, Georgia, who added 12 points and four rebounds. She was five of eight from the field and two of two from the free throw line.
Inna Leja, a 5’ 11” sophomore from Ventspils, Latvia, had nine points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. She hit two of three three-point shots. Kayla Ritchie also stepped up and added eight points, two assists and five rebounds.
This was the Lady Jets fifth consecutive win.
The Jets got off to a slow start in the second half of the double-header for the night and ended up dropping their fourth consecutive conference decision 77 – 59 in the match-up with the Middle Georgia Warriors.
The Jets came out sluggish and took almost nine minutes to score their first point of the night. They did pull to within nine points at the half with Middle Georgia leading 35 – 26. Middle Georgia outscored South Georgia Tech 42 – 31 in the second half to take the 77 – 59 win. The loss puts South Georgia Tech at 1 – 5 in the conference and 8 – 10 overall.
Khiry White, a 6’ 1” sophomore guard from Shaw High School in Columbus, Georgia, led the Jets in scoring with 17 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Kentavious Clowers, a 6’ 5” freshman forward from Nashville, Georgia, was the only other Jet in double figures and he had 14 points, six rebounds, four steals and one block.
Both the Lady Jets and the Jets will play at home this weekend as they host East Georgia College on Saturday, January 21st in another conference double-header. The Lady Jets play at 5:30 and the Jets follow at 7:30. East Georgia’s women are 2 – 6 in the conference and the men are 4 – 3.

Blue team holds off late charge from Gold team in Americus-Sumter’s 2012 spring football game
In the first Americus-Sumter football action of the 2012 year, the Blue team survived a late charge by the Gold team to earn the victory in the Panthers’ 2012 Spring game. After taking an early 13-0 lead, the Blue team had to sack Gold team quarterback Jonathon Thomas late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 13-6 win and earn bragging rights until next spring.

Wildcats’ baseball season comes to an end
Last Tuesday the Schley County Wildcats traveled to Charlton County to take on the Indians in the Class A state quarterfinals. The two teams were the final two public schools left in the Class A playoffs.

McKenzie selected to take part in Future Stars Game
Staley Middle School eighth grade quarterback Emory McKenzie is no stranger to success. Even McKenzie said he was taken aback, however, when he learned that he was chosen to represent his state in the Future Stars Game on June 16th.

GSW's Griffin secures top 10 finish at Nationals
He started the tournament with a birdie. He ended the tournament with a birdie. In between, Georgia Southwestern golfer J.P. Griffin continued to play some terrific golf at the three-round, three-day NCAA Division II National Championships. Griffin finished at 4-under par and tied for ninth place in the 108-player field.

Former GSW and SGTC coach Dawson named head coach at Central Georgia Technical College
Another former Georgia Southwestern assistant basketball coach will be the head coach of another program next fall. Reco Dawson, who was an assistant coach on Mike Leeder’s staff at GSW during the 2011-2012 basketball season, recently accepted the head coaching position at Central Georgia Technical College in Macon, Georgia.

Panthers spring football game set for Friday
Local football fans that are foaming at the mouth waiting for August to roll around can get a taste for the upcoming season this Friday night as the Americus-Sumter Panthers will be hosting their annual Blue-Gold spring game. The Panthers, who finished as the Region 1-AAA runner up in 2010 and 2011, will see how their team has progressed through their spring practices and evaluate their positions for the upcoming 2012 season.

Americus-Sumter dominates All-Region soccer team
The Region 1-AAA All-Region team was recently announced, and the Americus-Sumter Panthers won numerous awards from the head man all the way down to a freshman. After having an amazing year in which the Panthers finished with a 12-5 record and won the school’s first ever Region Championship in soccer, the Americus-Sumter soccer teams and head coach were recognized for all of their hard work with numerous post season awards.

GSW club fishing team to compete in National Tournament
Georgia Southwestern has a long history of being successful in athletics. From boasting the 2002 NAIA Player of the Year in baseball player Paul Bush, to winning the school’s first Division Championship in the NCAA-era with a Western Division Championship in the 2011 basketball season.

GSW’s Stephen Cox set to become Thomas University head basketball coach
Georgia Southwestern State University has announced that Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Stephen Cox has left the program to become the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Thomas University. Cox leaves Americus after spending the past three seasons as a member of Head Coach Mike Leeder's staff.

Jets sign Houston "Hootie" Cabbell from Osborne High School
South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Jets Head Coach Steven Wright announced that the Jets have signed Houston “Hootie” Cabbell from Osborne High School in Marietta, GA to play for the Jets in the 2012 – 2013 season.
