Wildcats top Whitefield, Athens Christian in Classic
ELLAVILLE — Schley County had a goal of collecting 20 hits this weekend in the Class A North-South Classic held in Ellaville.
The Wildcats fell short of that goal by pounding out 19, but they did get two wins against Whitefield Academy and Athens Christian.
Tyler Tondee hit two home runs in a 13-3 win Friday, and Taylor Law’s two-run single broke open the game in an 8-3 win on Saturday.
“They’re our four and five hitters in the lineup, and that’s going to be big if we can get those guys driving in runs,” said coach Chuck Cheek. “We know we can hit the baseball, but it’s a matter of, it seems like when the weather warms up, we get a little better.”
Christopher Tondee and Chad Crook received wins on the mound. Tondee pitched five innings allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Crook went six innings, striking out nine and allowing three runs — one earned — on seven hits.
Ryan Barnes and Jesse Colter pitched 1-2-3 innings in relief.
“I was really pleased with our pitching from Spud and Chad,” said Cheek. “If we can get those two guys to pitch like they did, we’ll have a real successful season.”
Colter was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI on Friday against Whitefield, and Law and Cody Robinson were 2-for-3 on Saturday.
A Jonathon Deriso single in the sixth broke a 3-3 tie, and Law followed with the homer.
Pacelli, the defending Class A champions beat Whitefield 2-1 and Athens Christian 15-0.
Schley (4-1) hosts Dooly County on Tuesday.
