Ernest Scott comes back to Southland

Chris Whitaker

AMERICUS — He’s back.

Ernest Scott has returned to coach the boys basketball team at Southland Academy.

Scott had coached the Raiders for seven seasons, leading them to a 98-77 record before resigning in March.

Southland Academy Headmaster Billy Stubbs is glad to have Scott back on campus.

“He coached here for seven years and done, in my opinion, an outstanding job with the talent he had,” said Stubbs. “I think having him back is a plus because we will have a number of players that are young and basically inexperienced. Having somebody that’s a veteran coach who’s been there before, it would be in our best interest.”

When Scott resigned, he stated he wanted to return closer to his home of Eatonton where he and his wife are from. Stubbs said the two parties never lost contact, and he left the door for him to return.

“We talked several times about what he was going to do,” said Stubbs. “He was checking to see if he could find something closer to home, and we told him we’d be looking. We hadn’t found the person we wanted at the time, and he said he’d like to talk if the job was still open.”

Scott was unavailable Wednesday evening for comment.

He led the Raiders to the AAA championship in 2007, the Final Four another time and three Elite Eight appearances. They were region champions once and runners-up five other times.

Southland finished this season 10-17.
