MOULTRIE — Brandon Looney surrendered one hit in three innings of work, and Hunter Weldon hit two home runs and drove in four runs as the Sumter Stallions beat Mitchell County and Bainbridge Monday night by scores of 19-1 and 6-3.
They play Grady County at 5:30 p.m in the championship.
Aaron Morris led the Stallions in the opener with three hits. Geoffrey McDonald, Thomas Welch, Reed Dillard, Allen Gleeson and Looney all had two hits. Looney had a triple and double, Mike Russell tripled, and McDonald, Dillard, Gleeson, Weldon and Ryan Weaver all had doubles.
The Stallions scored four in the first, seven in the second and eight to finish the game in the third.
“Brandon threw a lot of strikes and stayed ahead of the batters; it was good to get that first win at District,” said coach Marty McDonald.
Weldon pitched the last three innings of the second game to get the win, allowing two runs on one hit with seven strikeouts. Weldon helped his cause with two-run homers in the first and fifth innings, the last coming as insurance.
McDonald started the game on the mound and pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts. He added a double and scored three runs, and Looney had a single as the Stallions managed four hits.
“We only had four hits, but they all came at big times in the game,” said McDonald. “After Bainbridge tied the game in the top of the fifth, Looney got a big hit to get us going, then G (Geoffrey McDonald) knocked him in, and Hunter delivered the big blow to give us some breathing room. Hunter then struck out the side in the sixth for the win.”
