Stallions win GRPA District 3 title

Plays team from Albany in LL sub-district Monday-Tuesday

From Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — The Sumter Stallions 12-and-under baseball team beat Thomasville 12-0 Wednesday night to win the GRPA District 3 championship and are heading to the state tournament that begins July 8.

Sumter scored seven runs in the second and then five in the third before the game was called after four innings.

Brandon Looney pitched all four innings for the win, striking out five and allowing two hits. He helped his cause at the plate with a double.

Hunter Weldon homered while Ryan Weaver, Allen Gleeson and Alex Mast all had doubles.

“Defense was much better today,” said coach Marty McDonald. “I thought our pitching would be our strength, and for the most part, it was in the district tournament. It will have to be even better as we move along.

“The kids really played hard all week. We challenged them to make the state tournament, and they were determined. It’s been a lot of fun, but we have a lot more baseball to play.”

The team, which will be known as Sumter Area in Little League action, will play Monday and Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Little League sub-district against a team from Albany, with an “if” game on Wednesday.

The best-of-3 series will be in Americus.
