NEWTON —
The Schley County Wildcats were looking for a weekend sweep on Friday and Saturday nights as they welcomed Greenville to town for a Region 4-A match-up before traveling to Newton to take on Baker County in a non-region test. After coming up short on Friday night, the Wildcats made a big statement with a dominating 81-34 victory on Saturday to close out the weekend on a very high note.
On Friday night the Wildcats fell behind early as Greenville stormed out to an early 21-10 lead in the first period. After outscoring the ‘Cats 20-14 in the second quarter, Greenville would enter the locker room at the half holding on to a big 41-24 advantage.
Schley County would place a much better half in the final two periods, including battling Greenville to a 13-13 third quarter tie. Greenville would outscore Schley by only three points in the fourth and final quarter, but the first half would make all the difference in the Patriots 68-48 victory.
Kelsey Solomon led the way for Schley in scoring with 12 points, followed by Lotravious Minter with 11 points. Jon Thompson added seven points and Dexter Mason had six points in the tough loss.
Schley County would bounce back in a major way on Saturday, however, as they took a huge early lead an never looked back on their way to a 81-34 win over Baker County.
The Wildcats took the ball on the opening tip and started the game on fire with a 23-5 first quarter to claim a huge early lead on the Bears of Baker County. Schley County would keep the pressure on in the second quarter with a 29-10 run to stretch their halftime lead to a very impressive 52-15 margin.
The Wildcats would then put the game on cruise control, outscoring Baker County 16-14 and 13-5 in the final two periods to claim the massive 81-34 victory and send their season back in the right direction.
Solomon was once again the leading scorer for the ‘Cats with 14 points, followed by Broderick Brooks and Ne’Kevious Sims with 12 points each. Minter and Landon Henderson each tossed in 10 points to finish out the double-digit scorers for Schley.
Next up for the ‘Cats will be a tough road test against the powerful Marion County Eagles on Tuesday. The girl’s game will begin at 6 p.m., followed immediately by the boy’s game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
