Lady ‘Cats end with a win, ‘Cats fall short in regular season closer

TALBOTTON — It seems like just yesterday the Schley County Wildcats and Lady Wildcats were lacing up their sneakers for their first basketball games of the season against First Presbyterian Day in Ellaville. In the blink of an eye the two basketball squads from Schley were playing in their final games of the 2012-13 regular season on Friday night. The Lady ‘Cats ended a much improved season with yet another win over the Central-Talbotton Lady Hawks on the road to complete a winning 11-10 regular season, but the ‘Cats came up just short as they fell to the Hawks 57-42 to drop to 6-16 on the season and 2-12 in Region 4-A play.

Coming into the 2012-13 season the Lady Wildcats had only won seven games over the past three seasons. With their win on Friday night, first year head coach Jody Sellars led the Lady ‘Cats to a huge turnaround and a winning season with an 11-10 overall record. The Lady ‘Cats will now carry the momentum from a very successful season into the postseason as they prepare for the Region 4-A tournament this week.

Schley County started their night on Friday in a hole as Central raced out to a 16-14 first period lead. The Lady ‘Cats would fight back in the second period, however, and outscore the Lady Hawks 12-7 to claim a 26-23 halftime lead. Schley County would stretch their lead out even more with a 13-4 run in the third period, and as the final buzzer sounded the Lady ‘Cats began to celebrate their 53-44 victory in their regular season finale.

Sophomore Trenity Coleman had a huge night for Schley County in the Region 4-A victory with a game-high 27 points. Junior center Morgan Satterfield finished a tremendous night with 14 points, and fellow junior Mackenzie Smith added five points in the victory.

The boy’s game would start just the opposite as Schley County jumped in front early with an 11-8 first period run. Unfortunately for the ‘Cats, the Hawks would quickly come to life with a 19-7 second period score and they would continue to outscore Schley County in the second half to claim a come-from-behind 57-42 region victory. For the Wildcats, Tra Minter finished as the only scorer in double-digits with 16 points with senior forward Kelsey Soloman coming up just short with eight points in the loss.

The Wildcats will need to figure out how to keep their early momentum going on Wednesday because they will once again travel to Central to take on the Hawks, this time in the Region 4-A tournament opener. The Wildcats will tip off against their familiar foe at 5:30 p.m., and they will hope for a different outcome this time with a trip to the second round of the tournament on the line.
