AMERICUS —
The Sumter County Gymnastics Academy is anxiously awaiting Saturday morning when the program will host their first ever home gymnastics meet at their state-of-the-art facility at the Columns at Boone Park. The history-making Sumter Shamrock Invitational meet will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and will feature a second session beginning at 1 p.m. in the same location.
The Sumter County Gymnastics Academy teams are hard at work in their fourth year of competition under gymnastics director Melissa Singley. Singley has led her young gymnasts to several meet victories and the Sumter County Gymnasts will try to bring home several more victories on Saturday as they welcome two out of town teams to their gym for their first home meet.
Two teams from Albany will compete in the meet. The In Bound Gymnastics team will join the No Limitz Gymnastics team to try and knock off the extremely talented Sumter County Gymnastics Academy in their home opener. Admission for the Sumter Shamrock Invitational is set at $7 for adults and $3 for children. The Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department will also have a concession stand at the meet where spectators can enjoy hamburgers and other concessions with easy on-site access.
The first session, which begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, will feature to the two middle aged groups of the competition in the Level 2’s and the Prep 2’s. Following a lunch break the oldest groups of Level 3’s and 4’s will compete as well as the youngest group of Prep 1’s. In all, the Sumter County Gymnastics Academy will feature 33 girls competing along with five pre-team girls who will be competing for the first time ever at the meet.
The competition will be officiated by four professional judges who will decide the winners of four events. The gymnasts will be competing in the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and finally the floor exercise.
“This is our first home meet ever and we hope to continue this every year,” said Singley. “It will be a great opportunity for the community to come check out our wonderful facility and our local team.”
Prior to the Sumter Shamrock Invitational, the Americus-Sumter Panther gymnastics team will also break in the gym at the Columns at Boone Park on Friday night. In only their second season of competition, the Americus-Sumter gymnastics team will welcome Jones County to town for their first home meet ever. The Panthers match will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday night.

In the summer of 2009 he began the Dwight Harris Boys Club of Americus, Inc. as a youth development program to give children a fun activity to keep them off the streets and bridge the local racial gap.
