TALBOTTON —
The Marion County Eagles were figured to be heavy favorites in their away game versus a winless Central-Talbotton on Friday night. After four quarters and 72 offensive points, it is safe to say that the Eagles lived up to that prediction and then some.
Marion County scored more than 20 points in every quarter except the third on their way to a dominating 72-0 victory over the Central-Talbotton Hawks on Friday night, and the score could have easily been a lot worse. Trailing 47-0 at the half, the Hawks decided not to have a running clock in the second half which lengthened the game and gave the Eagles ample time to score with their backup players.
James Taylor had another fantastic game for Marion County and he got the Eagles on the scoreboard first with a 50 yard touchdown run less than two minutes into the game. DeMarquez Mallard added a one yard touchdown run with 5:22 left in the first quarter before Taylor would again break free on a 54 yard touchdown run to give the Eagles a 21-0 first quarter lead.
Marion County would continue to pile on in the second quarter with a 30 yard touchdown pass from Mallard to Lorenzo Smothers. Mallard would add his second touchdown on the ground with a five yard run, and follow with his second touchdown pass of the day to Markeese Bridges to stretch the Eagle lead to 40-0. With 46 seconds left in the half, Mallard would again find the end zone with his final touchdown of the night on a four yard run to give Marion County a huge 47-0 lead going into the halftime break in Talbotton.
The second half would feature many of the Eagles second string players, but their scoring wouldn’t skip a beat as they added 32 more points to their already staggering total.
Johnny Royal would get the Eagle scoring started in the third quarter with a 25 yard touchdown run and Tay Brown would begin the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 12 yard touchdown run. The Eagles would get another score after the Hawks fumbled the kickoff which was recovered by Vincent Ta in the end zone for yet another touchdown. The final score of the night would come from freshman running back Maurice Carter, who ran in for a one yard score to end the Eagles final scoring drive. Marion County would take a knee on the extra point, and the Eagles would head back to Buena Vista with the very impressive victory.
Marion finished the night with 459 total yards of offense, including 371 rushing yards, led by James Taylor with 161 yards on only nine carries and two scores. Royal had seven carries for 67 yards, and Mallard was four for six passing with 88 yards. On defense, Keon Dixon led the way with seven tackles followed by Brandon Green with five tackles. Bridges, Luther Lee, and Tay Brown all had interceptions to help the Eagles earn their second shut-out of the season.
Marion County finishes the regular season with an impressive 8-2 overall record and a 6-1 record in Region 4-A play with their lone blemish coming at the hands of Region Champion Brookstone. The Eagles will now begin preparing for their first round GHSA Class A State Playoff game against an opponent yet to be determined. The first round of the Class A playoffs will begin on Saturday, November 24.
