VIENNA —
The Schley County Wildcats were carrying a two game winning streak into their contest with Dooly County in Vienna on Friday night, but that winning streak quickly vanished as the extremely talented Bobcats jumped out to a large lead early and steadily added to it throughout the remainder of the game to hand the Wildcats their eighth loss of the 2012 season. The loss ends the 2012 season for the young Wildcat team that showed some great improvement at the end of the season on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Wildcat head coach Josh Kemp took his young team into Vienna and quickly fell behind to the powerful Bobcats. As the two teams entered the halftime break, Schley County trailed Dooly 28-0, and the early hole would be one that the ‘Cats could not climb out of in the one-sided victory.
Dooly County added 20 points onto their lead in the second half to stretch their margin of victory to 48-0. Although sophomore sensation Tra Minter rushed for 100 yards in the contest, the high powered Wildcat offense could never find their stride as they were shut out for the first time this season. The 48 points scored by the Bobcat offense was the most given up by the Wildcats since a 69-21 loss to Marion County on October 5.
Despite falling by a wide margin in their final game, the Wildcats showed continuous progress throughout the 2012 season. Coach Josh Kemp summarized the tough game and season for his young Wildcats team saying, “We had several key players injured early in the game. It was a hard season, but our kids really stuck together.”
Schley finished the season with a 2-8 overall record and a 2-5 Region 4-A record, which is not bad considering the slow 0-7 start to the year. The Wildcats went 2-1 in their last three games with victories over Central-Talbotton and Pacelli before falling to Dooly on the road. Minter and company will return in 2013 with another year of experience under their belt as they hope to make a run at the 4-A Region Championship and a playoff appearance.
