The Southland varsity boys swimming team finished in first place out of 16 teams at the Deerfield Windsor Invitational at the Albany State University pool Saturday, January 26. The Raiders won the team race despite finishing first in only one event during the competition.
The 200 medley relay team of Clay Copland, Josiah Copland, Devon Varnum and Cole Varnum scored a come-from-behind victory in the first event of the meet. The win by the 200 medley relay team helped push the Raiders ovr the top to claim the championship in the large meet.
“We jumped into the lead with that first relay, and then just accumulated enough place points in a very even field to hold onto the lead,” commented Raider coach Tim DeMott. “We have a lot of depth. Eleven of our twelve swimmers have qualified for the GISA State Championships this season.”
The junior varsity boys finished in fifth place in the team standings. The Raider girls varsity and junior varsity placed eleventh and nineth, respectively, in the Albany meet.
