ROME —
The South Georgia Technical College Jets captured their second consecutive conference win in a 72–58 decision over Georgia Highlands College in Rome Wednesday, but the Lady Jets fell a few points shy of a victory as they lost to the third ranked Georgia Highlands team 52–46.
The Jets moved to 9–4 in the conference and 19–4 overall with their win on the road. They are currently ranked third in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association behind East Georgia and Chattahoochee Tech. East Georgia is undefeated in the conference with an 11–0 record and Chattahoochee Tech is 12–2.
The Lady Jets remained in sixth place in the conference standings despite the loss to Georgia Highlands. They are 7–6 in conference play and 14–9 overall. They trail Darton, Central Georgia Tech, Georgia Highlands, Middle Georgia and Chattahoochee Tech.
The South Georgia Tech Jets trailed Georgia Highlands 29–26 at the end of the first half, but rallied in the second half to outscore Georgia Highlands 46–29 and capture the 72–58 victory.
Anthony Ethridge, who is still nursing an injured ankle, came off the bench to lead the Jets in scoring with 19 points. He was followed by B.J. Davis who added 15 points. Starters Stedmon Lemon and Jacob Obande were the only two other Jets to score in double-figures and then had 10 points each. Octavius Green only had four points, but he pulled down 13 rebounds.
The Lady Jets played Georgia Highlands very close in the first half and were only down by two points, 30–28, at the end of the first period. Georgia Highlands came back in the second half and outscored the Lady Jets by four points to increase their lead and capture the 52–46 win.
Nikkei Blackburn was the only Lady Jet in double-figures. She had 16 points and 17 rebounds. Portia McCray added eight points. Shaquaya Daniels only had two points but she had seven assists and five steals.
Both SGTC teams will now travel to Swainsboro on Monday, February 4 for a conference game with East Georgia. The East Georgia men are ranked number one in the conference with an unbeaten record. The Jets and Lady Jets return home on Wednesday, February 6th. The Lady Jets host the top-ranked Darton Lady Cavaliers at 5:30 and the Jets play Gordon College at 7:30 p.m. Gordon is ranked in fourth place behind the Jets in the conference standings.

Lady Jets’ Portia McCray signs with Lander University
South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets sophomore guard Portia McCrary has signed a letter of intent to play basketball with Lander University, a small public university located in Greenwood, South Carolina, for the 2013–2014 season. Lander University plays in the Peach Belt Conference.

A long recruiting process came to an end on Tuesday for Marion County senior place kicker and punter A.J. Wells. After completing a recent visit to Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Wells had seen all he needed to see to make his college choice. Following his senior year at Marion County this season, Wells will don the black and gold as Mountaineer on the Appalachian State football team.

Dwight Harris Boys Club promotes active summer time lifestyle
Four years ago, Dwight Harris noticed that many of the area’s local youth were cruising the streets and finding their way into trouble during the summer months between school years. Rather than looking the other way, Harris decided to make a difference by creating a summer time activity for local boys of all ages and races to participate in. In the summer of 2009 he began the Dwight Harris Boys Club of Americus, Inc. as a youth development program to give children a fun activity to keep them off the streets and bridge the local racial gap.

Local runners dominate ‘Loop the Lake’ 5k at Georgia Veterans Park
On Saturday runners from several southern states converged on Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park in Cordele for a run to benefit the GraceWay Recovery Residence in Albany, Georgia. GraceWay is a non-profit, faith-based, long-term substance abuse/addiction treatment community for women, and the ‘Loop the Lake’ run around Lake Blackshear was organized to raise funds for this great cause.

Hughes highlights postseason awards with All-State selection
Dillon Hughes made sure that he put an exclamation point on the end of a stellar baseball career at Southland Academy during his senior season. Hughes was recently selected to the 2013 GISA Class AAA All-State Team following a monster year, capping off postseason honors that included three All-Region 3-AAA selections and two Region 3-AAA Honorable Mention selections.
