Jets lose to top-ranked East Georgia in over-time; Lady Jets win

AMERICUS — The South Georgia Technical College Jets had a red-hot second half to come from behind and tie the game at 70–70 at the end of regulation against the top-ranked East Georgia College Bobcats in Swainsboro on Monday night. Unfortunately,  the Bobcats outscored the Jets 13–6 in overtime to capture the 83–76 decision.  The Lady Jets opened the night with a 60–40 win over the Lady Bobcats.

This was the second overtime loss for the Jets since January. They are currently 9–5 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Conference and 19–5 overall. Four of the Jets’ five losses occurred since January, with two coming in overtime and two by a mere two points.  

The Jets fell behind 43–32 at the end of the first half in the match-up with East Georgia. They came back in the second half and outscored East Georgia 38–27 before dropping the 83–76 loss in overtime.

The Bobcats are currently leading the GCAA with a 12–1 record. They are 20–2 overall.

Anthony Ethridge led the Jets in scoring with 24 points, and Octavius Green scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds. Stedmon Lemon and Jacob Obande rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Jets with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.

The Lady Jets started hot and took a commanding 36–21 lead at the end of the first half against the East Georgia Lady Bobcats.  They continued to outscore East Georgia 24–19 in the second half to cruise to the 60–40 conference victory. The win moved the Lady Jets to 8-6 in the GCAA and 15–9 overall.

DeKoya Mack was the leading scorer for the Lady Jets with 16 points. She made four of her eight three-point attempts.  Courtne Washington tossed in 12 points and Kikkei Blackburn rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points. She also had 10 rebounds. Shaquaya Daniels did not score but she had 17 assists, seven rebounds and four steals on the night.

The Jets and Lady Jets host Chattahoochee Tech on Saturday, February 9th at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

    The Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department (SCPRD) track and field team dominated their area meet to qualify 40 participants for the state meet at Carrollton High School’s Grisham Stadium last weekend. The SCPRD team followed their stout area showing  by performing exceptionally well in the state meet to close out their 2013 season.

    The Southland Academy Raiders quickly found themseleves with their backs against the wall in the first round of the GISA Class AAA baseball playoffs last weekend. After surrendering nine runs to the Loganville Chirstian Academy Lions in the first inning in the first of a three-game series, it looked as if Southland might be traveleing back to Americus early. The resilient Raiders were not looking for an early return trip, however, and after a tremendous comeback in a 11-10 opening game loss Southland rebounded with two dominating victories to move on to the quarterfinals on Thursday.
