As they approach the home stretch of the 2011-12 season, the Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes were looking to feed off the crowd on hand for GSW's homecoming as they took on Montevallo Saturday evening in the Storm Dome. Fans, students and patrons went home happy as Coach Britsky and company secured a 69-51 victory over the visiting Lady Falcons.
The GSW defense was good, not great, in some regards. They did hold the short-handed Lady Falcons to 18-56 (32.1percent) shooting from the field for the game, but gave up 16 offensive rebounds as GSW lost the rebound game 36-35. The Blue & Gold were able to force 17 Montevallo turnovers and block four shots.
Terra Branch led the Lady Hurricanes in scoring for the eighth consecutive game. The senior from Athens would tally 20 points on seven of twelve shooting from the field, which included an ultra-efficient five of seven from beyond the arc. The guard would also grab four rebounds and dish out a career-high seven assists. Branch would receive scoring help from fellow senior guards Jessica Bivins (twelve points) and Tania Walters (eleven points) to round out the leading GSW scorers.
Montevallo, who would only play seven players, was led by point guard Trena Moore-Smith who finished the evening with fourteen points, seven rebounds and three assists. The only other Lady Falcon to score in double digits was forward Taylor Beverly who scored ten points to go along with her five rebounds.
The game was back and forth for the first three minutes before Montevallo would use a 10-4 run in 4:51 to take their biggest lead at 14-9. However, Georgia Southwestern would kick it into gear and outscore UM 26-10 over the half's final twelve minutes to secure the 35-24 halftime lead.
Branch would score twelve of her 20 points in the first half, and Adrian Randall would register four points, five rebounds and a block in the first half. Randall would eventually finish the game with four points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
The eleven-point halftime lead would hold up for much of the second half as Montevallo would only be able to cut it to as few as ten points before the game finished with a 18-point final margin with the 69-51 GSW victory.
The victory puts the GSW record now at 16-6 (8-5 PBC) and firmly plants the Lady Hurricanes in second place in the PBC West Division behind nationally-ranked Clayton State. The Lady 'Canes will look to win its fifth consecutive game (eight out of its last ten games) as they will host the aforementioned, nationally-ranked Lady Lakers of Clayton State. Tip-off will be at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening inside the Storm Dome.

Blue team holds off late charge from Gold team in Americus-Sumter’s 2012 spring football game
In the first Americus-Sumter football action of the 2012 year, the Blue team survived a late charge by the Gold team to earn the victory in the Panthers’ 2012 Spring game. After taking an early 13-0 lead, the Blue team had to sack Gold team quarterback Jonathon Thomas late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 13-6 win and earn bragging rights until next spring.

Wildcats’ baseball season comes to an end
Last Tuesday the Schley County Wildcats traveled to Charlton County to take on the Indians in the Class A state quarterfinals. The two teams were the final two public schools left in the Class A playoffs.

McKenzie selected to take part in Future Stars Game
Staley Middle School eighth grade quarterback Emory McKenzie is no stranger to success. Even McKenzie said he was taken aback, however, when he learned that he was chosen to represent his state in the Future Stars Game on June 16th.

GSW's Griffin secures top 10 finish at Nationals
He started the tournament with a birdie. He ended the tournament with a birdie. In between, Georgia Southwestern golfer J.P. Griffin continued to play some terrific golf at the three-round, three-day NCAA Division II National Championships. Griffin finished at 4-under par and tied for ninth place in the 108-player field.

Former GSW and SGTC coach Dawson named head coach at Central Georgia Technical College
Another former Georgia Southwestern assistant basketball coach will be the head coach of another program next fall. Reco Dawson, who was an assistant coach on Mike Leeder’s staff at GSW during the 2011-2012 basketball season, recently accepted the head coaching position at Central Georgia Technical College in Macon, Georgia.

Panthers spring football game set for Friday
Local football fans that are foaming at the mouth waiting for August to roll around can get a taste for the upcoming season this Friday night as the Americus-Sumter Panthers will be hosting their annual Blue-Gold spring game. The Panthers, who finished as the Region 1-AAA runner up in 2010 and 2011, will see how their team has progressed through their spring practices and evaluate their positions for the upcoming 2012 season.

Americus-Sumter dominates All-Region soccer team
The Region 1-AAA All-Region team was recently announced, and the Americus-Sumter Panthers won numerous awards from the head man all the way down to a freshman. After having an amazing year in which the Panthers finished with a 12-5 record and won the school’s first ever Region Championship in soccer, the Americus-Sumter soccer teams and head coach were recognized for all of their hard work with numerous post season awards.

GSW club fishing team to compete in National Tournament
Georgia Southwestern has a long history of being successful in athletics. From boasting the 2002 NAIA Player of the Year in baseball player Paul Bush, to winning the school’s first Division Championship in the NCAA-era with a Western Division Championship in the 2011 basketball season.

GSW’s Stephen Cox set to become Thomas University head basketball coach
Georgia Southwestern State University has announced that Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Stephen Cox has left the program to become the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Thomas University. Cox leaves Americus after spending the past three seasons as a member of Head Coach Mike Leeder's staff.

Jets sign Houston "Hootie" Cabbell from Osborne High School
South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Jets Head Coach Steven Wright announced that the Jets have signed Houston “Hootie” Cabbell from Osborne High School in Marietta, GA to play for the Jets in the 2012 – 2013 season.
