AMERICUS — September 28 seemed to be a typical Fall Sunday with a slight breeze appearing at different intervals throughout the day, and a hint of a possible rain above with greying clouds.
For many citizens, especially the family of the late Charles S. Hogg, Sunday was more than just a typical day.
Gathering on the lawn of Rees Park, near a fountain which was dedicated in memory of Hogg, young and old alike shared memories of the impact Hogg had had on the community and individuals, like themselves.
According to those present, especially those who took the microphone, like Bill Bird, Kiwanis Club of Americus president, John Argo, Senator George Hooks and Mayor Barry Blount, Hogg truly exhibited what the Boy Scout motto speaks of. He lived doing his best, serving God and his country, and helped other people at all times, especially the young in the community.
Instrumental in the development of many young men’s lives through his work as a Scout leader, Charles S. Hogg was honored with a plaque and a memorial fountain near the gazebo at Rees Park.
Present from the family were his daughter, Frances Scoggins, who unveiled the plaque with assistance from Hooks and Bill Bird.
Scoggins, upon looking at the plaque, smiled, deeply touched, and was heard to whisper, “Wow, that’s great.”
Bird and Hooks recognized other distinguished guests in the audience, including members of Boys Scout Troop 21 past and present, as well as contributors to the memorial fountain. Those that contributed were members of The Kiwanis Club of Americus, and Eagle Scouts(past and present), like John Argo, Larry Brown, Don Card, Lamar Dixon, Mrs. Bob Ellis, Sen. George Hooks, Randy Jones, Fred Morton, Parnell Odom, Eddie Pope, Russell Speer, Dr. William “Hap” Tietjen, Paul White, Doyle Bond, Bud Bryan, Bob Culpepper, Dr. Gatewood Dudley, Tim Furlow, Dr. Richard Greene, Jimmy Loyd, Douglas Morris, Oliver Oxford, Bill Purdue, Harold Summerford, Judge Rick Waitsman, Carter Broadhurst, Jimmy Buchanan, Dr. Jimmy Davis, Dr. Jim Dudley, Chan Gailey, Terrell Horne, Dickey Morgan, Pittman Morris, Winston Oxford, Johnny Sheffield, Dr. Henry Teaford, Charles Warren, Eric Brown, Frank Butler, Harry Dellinger, Billy Elam, Dr. Schley Gatewood, Jr., Bob Ivey, Bill Morton, Lofton Odom, Mrs. Roy Parker, Herschel Smith, III., Dr. Lamar Teaford, and Dan Willis.
Hooks did extend gratitude to the City of Americus, Jess Grace and his staff, Ernie’s Quality Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., and Philmon Electric, as well as Scott Aldridge and Aldridge Funeral Home, for their assistance in the project and in having a part in the special ceremony.
A member of the Troop 21 led in the Scoutmasters Benediction, and two of the Scouts removed the colors.
After the ceremony, those in attendance were invited to the Scoggins’ home for a reception.
