Food Pantry: The Sumter Area Ministerial Association’s (SAMA) Food Pantry will reopen today inside the former Americus Colored Hospital building at the corner of North Jackson and J.R. Campbell streets.



Chamber Concert Series: Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has announced its 2012-2013 Chamber Concert Series —  Today – Montana Skies, The Rylander Theatre; Jan. 29 – Manhattan Piano Trio; Feb. 12 – Graffe String Quartet with Michiko Otaki, piano and April 8 – Sima Trio. All performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. in GSW’s Jackson Performance Hall, unless otherwise noted. Tickets available and can be purchased at the door. Airport Authority: The Americus-Sumter County Airport Authority meets at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the board room of the terminal building at Jimmy Carter Regional Airport at Souther Field. The meeting is open to the public.



GSW Convocation: John A. Neuenschwander, Ph.D., a retired history professor and municipal judge from Kenosha, Wis., is the featured speaker for a Georgia Southwestern State University convocation at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Jackson Performance Hall. The title of his speech is “Oral History in the 21st Century.”

This event is free and open to the public.



Downtown Open House: The Americus Center for the Arts, downtown Americus, will hold open house from 4-8 p.m. Thursday. Caregiver Support: Innovative Senior Solutions Caregivers Group meets at 5:40 p.m. Thursday at Americus Day Health Center, 721-A Felder St. Guest speaker is Jackie McLear from Legal Shield presenting information on family legal services and benefits. The purpose of the group is to provide valuable information that is needed when taking care of a senior loved one.



Service Board: The Middle Flint Behavioral HealthCare Community Service Board mets at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the administrative offices, 415 N. Jackson St. The meeting is open to the public.



Father-Son Day: A.S. Staley Middle School hosts its annual Man-Up —  Father & Son Day from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Man-Up celebrates the importance of strong relationships between father and son and/or other prominent male figures in the family. A number of seminars on various topics will be presented. There will also be a Father & Son Basketball Tournament. Entry fee is $12.



Plains

Cane Day: Jimmy Carter National Historic Site hosts the celebration of Cane Syrup Day on Saturday. Demonstrations will be presented between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This event will highlight cane syrup making in the “good old days.” Demonstrations will include cane stripping, cane squeezing, syrup making, corn shelling and blacksmithing.  



Ellaville:

Board of Trustees: The Lake Blackshear Regional Library Board meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ellaville-Schley County Senior Citizen Center. The meeting is open to the public.

Destruction of Records:  This notice contains information for special education students who have attended Sumter County/Americus City Schools. Federal regulations under 34 C.F.R. Part 300 (I.D.E.A.) allows school districts to destroy special education records/files when they are no longer needed for the education of the child. Special education records for students whose birth dates fall between Jan. 1, 1983 and and Dec. 31, 1989, will be destroyed unless Sumter County Schools is notified by Dec. 31, 2012.  Special education students have the right to request copies of these records for their files Copies of records will be made available within 45 days of the written request. All written requests should be sent to Sumter County Schools Program for Exceptional Students Office by Dec. 31, 2012.

Flu Vaccine: The Sumter County Health Department, 1601 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., is offering the flu vaccine from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays. The regular Fluzone and intranasal flu mist if $23, and the Fluzone high dose, formulated for ages 65 and over is $40. Medicaid, Medicare, cash and debit cards accepted.



City of Americus Water and Gas Customers: This is a reminder that damaging gas and water meters, whether intentional or not, is considering tampering. Citizens will be required to replace the meter and/or components at their own cost and may be subject to fines. The current cost of a standard residential meter and its components is approximately $250 plus $50 installation. Care should be taken with lawn mowers and other equipment used around meters. Additionally, it is unlawful to turn your meters on once the City has disconnected services. This is considered theft of services and there are established fines up to $1,200.  If you have any questions, call Customer Service Department 924-4411.



Smoke Detector Blitz: Americus Fire & Emergency Services will  conduct door-to-door smoke detector blitzes on the second Saturday of each month. You can also call 924-3213 to set up an appointment for firefighters to come install smoke detectors and give you information on fire safety.

Americus Volunteers Needed: The Flint River Chapter of the American Red Cross needs local volunteers. If you are interested in working as a volunteer in our office or helping with local disasters such as single-family fires, call 924-2026 and speak with Wanda, volunteer coordinator.



Anonymous Crime Tipline: The Americus Police Department has an anonymous crime tip line 924-4102. Citizens can leave information for police about crime in their neighborhood or other areas. The calls are completely anonymous.



Revised Hours: The Americus Police Department has revised its hours of operation for the front lobby in an effort to accommodate  late afternoon commuters and workers. Hours of operation are now 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. This will allow citizens who work during the day an opportunity to take care of any pending business they have at the police department such as obtaining incident reports or picking up and dropping off criminal histories.



Faith Clinic: Sumter Faith Clinic is a non-profit organization directed at meeting the spiritual and health care needs of residents of Sumter County who do not have health insurance or an affordable means to health care. Services include basic, non-emergent medical care of acute conditions as well as treatment of some chronic conditions. Services are delivered by volunteers. The clinic is located at 127 S. Jackson St. next to First Presbyterian Church. Hours of operation are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays.



CPR Classes: Americus Fire and Emergency Services will offer American Heart Association CPR certification classes. Call Harriett Williams at 924-3213 for more information.



Water Restrictions: The City of Americus has implemented the following water restrictions, established by the state Environmental Protection Division as Level II drought restrictions. Outdoor watering is allowed on the following days: North of Lamar Street on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday; and South of Lamar Street on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. No watering is allowed on Fridays. Outdoor water use is allowed only between midnight and 10 a.m. on scheduled days. Restrictions affect all residential, commercial, government and institutional outdoor irrigation and other nonessential water uses. These include watering lawns and landscapes, gardens, washing cars at residential sites and hosing streets and sidewalks. These restrictions will be strictly enforced. No Burning: The City of Americus has an ordinance that forbids outside burning within the City limits. The Fire Marshal and police will be issuing tickets, which result in fines, to anyone who violates this ordinance. There will be no warnings issued.

Volunteers Needed: Phoebe Sumter Hospice is looking for volunteers to help with the needs of the terminally ill and their loved ones. Volunteers Needed: SOWEGA Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), office serving a six-county area, needs volunteers to work with abused and neglected children who are involved in the court system.
