In honor of Black History Month, Sisters in Service of Southwest Georgia will host a special community event on Saturday, February 15, 2025, to celebrate and recognize the contributions of unsung African American heroes. The event, which is free to the public, will be held at the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 411 Cotton Avenue, Americus, GA. The doors open for the public at 1:00PM with pre- program activities starting at 1:30PM.

The highlight of the event will be the screening of the 2024 film The Six Triple Eight, directed by Tyler Perry. The film tells the inspiring story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female battalion in World War II first deployed overseas. The movie, featuring an ensemble cast including Kerry Washington and Oprah Winfrey, brings to light the invaluable contributions of this historic battalion. A noteworthy connection to our local community is that Private Ozzie Bell Smothers, a native of the Lee County/Sumter County area, served in the 6888th Battalion. The Smothers Family will be our honored guests.

This event is open to the community and provides a meaningful opportunity to celebrate, inspire, and engage with one another. Featured performance by the Sumter County Middle School Chorus and Director, Queenester Covington and introduction of the movie by (Retired Army Veteran) Essie Holt. All concessions are complimentary. The replenishment of school supplies for all school-aged students will be distributed. An informative and intriguing Black Inventors Trivia will be implemented with gifts and prizes.
