- Furlow Charter School performs Laundry and Bourbon.
Furlow Charter School performed Laundry and Bourbon on March 8. The main actress Kennedy Wilson won best actress at region and at state, and Joy Jackson and Julia Walker were both named members of the All Star Cast at region and at state. Roxanne Gatian is their director.
The play is set in the 1970s and is about three women from Texas. The emotions and humor expressed by the actors felt real and genuine, and the stage was simplistic but held a rustic charm, having been constructed by students. The play delt with topics ranging from religion, class, and family life, at times serious and sentimental and at other times lighthearted.
Wilson played Elizabeth, and has around four years of acting experience. She gave the shifts in emotion as one of the chief challenges of her role. She stated the dynamic between their characters was one they commonly played. “I think it’s just funny that we always pick the cast with someone like Hattie, someone who’s a little more crisp-and-clean like Amy Lee, and then somebody who’s dealing with something emotionally.”
Jackson played Hattie, and has also been acting for four years. She described the preparation that went into assuming her role. “At first, it was a little stressful, and then once I got the hang of it, it just became easy.” She gave the primary challenges in acting. “First learning the part, and really getting into the role that you must play.”
She stated what led her to acting. “My first movie that I ever watched was a Tyler Perry movie, and I just thought they were so funny that I just said, ‘I want to be on that stage one day.’”
Walker played Amy Lee, and has been acting since around the age of twelve. She shared what made her character challenging. “Really just trying to figure out how to portray, like, her emotions and everything. She’s a very strange character.”
She stated the most challenging part. “The most challenging part for me was just memorizing lines.” Walker gave her favorite part of acting. “The people you get to know, and then, like, finally performing.” She described the feeling of being able to finally put it all together on the stage. “The best feeling ever.”
