Furlow Charter School held their ten-year anniversary celebration on March 29. Julia Skala, a 2020 alumni of Furlow, is now a special education advisor for kindergarten through 5th grade at her alma mater. She started coming to Furlow in her eight-grade year, which was the first year of Furlow. “I was able to make more friends. I was able to kind of grow up as a person and even as a leader coming here. So I wanted to come back and kind of give back to Furlow.”
She described the shift from student to teacher, with her old teachers now her co-workers. “It’s been it’s been very different, being that scholar versus the advisor.”
Skala shared the variety of paths other alumni have taken. “We’ve got college students for engineering at KSU, we’ve got nursing majors at Columbus State. We’ve got sculpture and drawing majors at UGA.” She also listed two biology majors at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
The ten-year celebration featured an exhibit of student photography spanning a wide range of themes and styles. The set from Laundry and Bourbon was displayed in the gym, a one-act play Furlow students performed at state, winning third place.
One of the highlights of the celebrations was the third annual talent show. Fifth grader Kinsley Daniel won first place in the talent show. It was her first year participating, and she performed a dance routine. She gave the cartwheel and split as the most challenging parts. “It felt exciting, and I really liked it.”
Fourth grader Isabelle “Izzy” Luten won second place, singing waiting on a miracle. “It was really cool, because I never got second place in anything.”
