Kiwanis’s annual golf tournament was held April 18 at the Griffen Bell golf course. The tournament is a major fundraiser for the club. Wesley Larkin served as golf tournament chair. Registration began at noon with the tournament starting at 1:00 p.m.

President of the Americus Kiwanis Club, Herschel Smith, thanked those participating in the tournament. The money raised from the tournament supports scholarships, spelling bees, Boy Scout Troop 21 and Pack 121.

Cool breezes kept a beautiful blue-sky day bright instead of sweltering, and a few Canadian geese sauntered across the rolling course.

First place team made a score of 60 and comprised Carlyle Walton, Bill Heys, and Terrell Templin. As President of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Walton decided to bring his friends to represent the hospital. “We believe in sponsoring events like this, and so I got two of my friends who are a little older than I am, I’m not calling any ages. So I played the white tees, they played the blue tees. They carried us today.”

Walton credited Templin with some long puts, and complimented Heys’ driving. Walton is also a member of Kiwanis, and spoke of the club’s mission. “It’s about supporting the children of our community, and makes a big difference.”

Second place team made a score of 62 and comprised John Mixon, Noah Mixon, and Jackson Avant. Avant shared their experience. “Tough conditions out there today, we did our best. We left some out there on the course for sure today, but we played good as a team.” He also complimented the course. “We’re blessed to have this in our community.”
