AMERICUS – South Georgia Technical College’s TaQuandra Mike has been selected as a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) 2014–2015 Division I All-American Honorable Mention basketball player.

Mike has helped lead her team to 58 wins, 13 losses, two district titles, and two NJCAA division I national tournament appearances during the past two seasons.

“We are excited for Tata (TaQuandra Mike),” said Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “It’s an honor to be recognized by the NJCAA as one of the best in the country. She has worked hard and has been a great ambassador for our program and our college. She always credits her teammates for our success and rightfully so, but she has been a great leader for her teammates to follow.”

This is the second consecutive year that South Georgia Technical College has had a Lady Jet selected to the NJCAA All-American squad. Last season, Shamekia “Polly” Murray, was selected as a second-team All-American. She and TaQuandra Mike helped lead the Lady Jets to their second NJCAA National Tournament and the college’s best single season record of 30 wins and only five losses.

“It almost seems unbelievable when you think about the two seasons that the Lady Jets have had under sophomores TaQuandra Mike and Mikalia Wallace and sophomore transfer Alexis Armstrong. Those three young ladies have made a positive mark for our program and it has been a pleasure for me and Assistant Coach Kezia Conyers to coach them,” said Frey. “And this season, they accomplished this with the help of seven freshmen.”

Mike played at Groves High School in Savannah and was selected as a NJCAA Top 40 Student/Athlete as a freshman. This season, she was named to the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) first team All-Conference squad and to the NJCAA Region XVII All-Tournament team in addition to her NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention.

The sophomore guard started 35 of 36 games for the Lady Jets this season.  She averaged over 17 points per game and 5.5 rebounds. She is a 41 percent field goal shooter and a 36 percent shooter from the three-point line. She also made 63 percent of her free throw shots.

She is currently being recruited by a number of top four-year colleges and universities and has several more visits scheduled before she makes a decision on where to continue her education and basketball career.
