AMERICUS — At a called meeting Wednesday to discuss personnel and facilities, Donnie Smith, Sumter County Schools superintendent, tendered his resignation to the Sumter County Board of Education.
When contacted by the Times-Recorder, Smith said it was “a mutual agreement” between the board and himself. He said an average length of service for a superintendent is two years, and he’s has the job for three and a half. He also served as the Pre-K director for the system.
A veteran educator, Smith has been with the school system for 25 years.
“I’ve enjoyed working with everybody — the board, staff, teachers and students,” he said.
Smith said he will remain as a consultant to the system on an as-needed basis to help ensure a smooth transition. He said the board will be appointing in interim superintendent soon.
