AMERICUS — For two days in February, Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has played host to nearly 700 of the brightest high school students in the state.
On Thursday, Feb. 11, the GSW School of Education hosted one of six Future Georgia Educators Days sponsored by Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE). Ernie Lee, Georgia’s 2016 Teacher of the Year, served as the event’s featured speaker. Student workshops and a college fair rounded out the day’s events.
“The workshops created and presented by Georgia Southwestern faculty and education majors were designed to help them learn about the teaching profession,” said School of Education Dean Rachel Abbott, Ph.D. “The students were also able to participate in a college recruitment fair and meet with GSW Admissions while on campus. Overall, the day was a great opportunity for the School of Education to partner with PAGE to host an exciting day of learning and networking for those who may be considering a career in teaching.”
On Friday, Feb. 12, the GSW School of Computing and Mathematics hosted its 42nd annual High School Math Tournament for approximately 450 students from 50 high schools across Georgia.
“We have had many compliments in the past on our tournament, and we will continue to do everything we can to make this a positive experience for the high school students and their teachers,” said Kailash Ghimire, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics and tournament director. “When these students think about college choices, we want GSW to be on their short list.”
Schools in GHSA (Georgia High School Association) classifications and schools in GISA (Georgia Independent Schools Association) classifications participated in written and ciphering problem-solving portions. The tournament recognizes team and individual achievement.
The annual Middle School and Elementary Math Tournament will take place Saturday, March 5, 2016 at GSW.
