AMERICUS — Nancy C. Smith, clerk of Superior Court, will retire at the end of her current term, which ends Dec. 31, 2016.
Smith was first appointed as clerk of Superior Court in 1999, to complete a two-year unexpired term of then clerk Betty Shattles. Smith was elected to her first term in 2000, the first of four elections in which she ran unopposed for the office. She had served eight years as deputy clerk prior to 1999.
After almost 35 years in the clerk’s office, Smith said it’s time for a change.
“After much prayerful consideration, I have decided not to seek reelection for a fifth term of office,” she told the Times-Recorder. “I have certainly enjoyed serving the citizens of Sumter County as their elected clerk. It has been an honor and privilege to be a part of the public service sector for the last 34-plus years. I want to express my thanks to the people of Sumter County for the confidence they have shown in me by allowing me to serve them in this capacity.”
