ANDERSONVILLE – Running and history enthusiasts alike made their way to Andersonville on April 16 for the third annual “Running Thru History 5K” race, hosted by the Andersonville National Historic Site.
105 racers participating in the event were treated to a journey through historic Andersonville, where they had the opportunity compete among the notable landmarks.
Prizes were awarded to the race winners in several categories.
Troy Willis, of Perry, took home top honors as the overall male winner after finishing the race with a time of 20:47:40.
Keith Wishum, of Americus, took the first-place award in the male age 55-59 category, completing the race in 25:55:86, just short of the overall female winner, Jessica Childers, of Leslie, who came in with a time of 24:30:43. Scott Wiggins, of Americus, took second-place honors in the males ages 55-59 with a time of 26:17:89.
15 runners from Sumter County participated in the event, with other runners coming in from as far away as Forsyth and Decatur.
John Harvard, of Americus won second place in the male, age 60-64 category, finishing the race in 25:57:47.
Chad Bell, of Americus, won in the masters male category with a time of 22:26:11.
Proceeds from the event went to benefit the Macon County Recreation Department.
