BRUNSWICK — Martha Andrews, age 74, formally of Augusta, Georgia, and Highlands, North Carolina, died Oct. 5, 2016, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Ga., after a long and dignified battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A native of Brunswick, she was born Dec. 2, 1942, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Roberta Asa Sapp of Glynn County.

A devoted Episcopalian, Martha was well read and traveled. She was beloved by all who knew her for her gentle smile and sweet nature. Martha loved and supported Georgia football, often greeting friends with “Go Dawgs!” Her accomplishments are numerous and diverse.

After graduating from Glynn Academy, she obtained a bachelor of arts in English from Emory University in Atlanta, a master’s degree from the University of Houston, followed by a juris doctorate where she practiced law for the firm Bell, Choate and Walker in Augusta. She later earned a doctorate in English education from the University of Georgia in 1995. After studying abroad in Oxford, England, she taught AP English classes including creative writing and Shakespeare at Davidson Fine Arts School, Augusta. Martha was a Governor’s Honors judge and a talented chef. She had assisted her friend Natalie Dupree in her culinary schools throughout the state.

Martha is survived by a son, Emory Andrews Fiveash of Augusta; a sister Bobbie S. Bagley and brother in-law Dr. George W. Bagley IV of Leslie, Ga.; a nephew George W. Bagley V of Atlanta; a niece, Mimi Bagley Jennings (Phil) of Soperton; and lifelong friend Carol Page Ploeger (Paul) of St. Simons Island.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Palmetto Cemetery. Due to the recent hurricane, a memorial service will be held at a later date at Christ Church Frederica, St. Simons Island, Ga.
