Red Cross issues emergency call for blood

AMERICUS — The American Red Cross is issuing an emergency call for blood.
At this time of year, with schools out and families on vacation, there is a slump in donations. The Red Cross is now distributing blood to hospitals faster than it is being donated. Summer shortages leave children fighting cancer, older adults with chronic illnesses, or accident victims struggling to survive without lifesaving support.
Blood donors are critically needed to donate within the next seven days to help meet the needs of hospital patients locally and across the country.
While any blood type will be accepted, there is a critical need for type O positive.
A community blood drive will be held Americus First Baptist Church, 221 S. Lee St., 8 a.m.-6 p.m. June 23 (sponsor code PSMC)
