HAWKINSVILLE – The Schley County Wildcats football team boosted their overall record to 2-1 on the 2017 season on Sept. 15, traveling to Hawkinsville to open Region 4-A competition against longtime rivals, the Red Devils.
The game remained gridlocked through the initial three quarters as each team strove to gain an advantage over their opponent, though the Wildcats managed to pull away in the final frame to clinch a 24-17 victory.
With the win, the Schley squad kicks off their region season with a 1-0 record.
Neither team would manage to put any points on the board in the first quarter, but both squads broke their silence in the second stanza with three points apiece to enter the halftime break in a 3-3 deadlock.
The break served both teams well and the Wildcats and Red Devils stepped up their offenses after returning to the field. Both squads added a touchdown in the third frame to bump the tie up to 10-10 entering the final period.
Schley finally got the break that they were looking for in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Red Devils 14-7 to take home the win.
Individual scoring statistics for the match-up were not available at press time.
The Wildcats will continue Region 4-A competition on Sept. 22, celebrating Homecoming with a tilt against the Dooly County Bobcats. The Bobcats currently sport a 0-4 record on the season.
Schley fans are in for a mid-week treat four days later, as the team’s tilt against Georgia Military College (GMC), which was postponed earlier in the season, has been rescheduled for Sept. 26 at 6:00 in Ellaville. The GMC Bulldogs will bring a 3-1 overall record to the make-up game.
The ‘Cats will then take a week off before taking the field again on October 6 to put their gridiron skills to the test against region foes, the Taylor County Vikings.
