AMERICUS – Southland senior pitcher Harrison Bell signed a letter of intent to play college baseball at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort. The signing took place on Monday, March 12, at Southland Academy.
Bell has been a stellar student-athlete for Southland Academy. He is not only a pitcher on the baseball team, but has also been instrumental in leading the Raiders on the basketball court as well.
Bell was one of three seniors who led the Raiders to a 19-7 record and a second-round appearance in the GISA State Basketball Tournament. The 2017-18 Raider basketball team got off to their best start in 35 years. Bell hit seven three-pointers in a game, tying the school record. Though he is a fine basketball player, Bell will concentrate on baseball at USC Beaufort, where he will be used primarily as a pitcher.
Bell required surgery after last season to remove a small piece of bone from his elbow. He’s made a full recovery, and is enjoying his senior year at Southland. “I’m thankful that my parents and coaches have helped me throughout the years,” Bell said. “I couldn’t have made it this far without them encouraging me and instilling in me the importance of having a good work ethic. Mostly, I am thankful that God has given me the ability to play and enjoy the game of baseball.”
Southland Head Baseball Coach John Brady praised Bell for his work ethic. “Harrison is a great kid. He has worked very hard to get to this point,” Brady said. “We look forward to seeing him do great things at the next level.”
