PLAINS — Old Farm Day will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm in Archery, just west of Plains. This special event, which is free to the public, highlights farm life in the “good ol’ days.”
Prior to 1943, Earl Carter, father of President Jimmy Carter, did not own a tractor, so mules did all the heavy work of plowing, planting, weeding, and harvesting the crops in the fields. Today the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site has two mules, Birde and Belle, who plow the plots of ground where peanuts, cotton, and corn are grown.
The staff and volunteers of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site will demonstrate various facets of young Jimmy Carter’s life such as plowing with mules, blacksmithing, basketry, bee keeping, and there will be an antique tractor on display.
