SMITHVILLE — Mr. O.C. Jones, age 89, passed away early Sunday morning, Dec. 2, 2018, at his home in Smithville.
Funeral services with military honors are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the committal pavilion at Andersonville National Historic Site, with the Rev. Wendy Peacock officiating. Interment will follow in Andersonville National Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family received friends between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m. on Monday at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St.
Born Jan. 3, 1929, in Whigham, Ga., he was a son of the late Russell T. Jones and the late Zona Owens Jones. Mr. Jones was retired after 25 years of service in the United States Air Force, where he served as a fire fighter and achieved the rank of master sergeant, and later worked for 16 years in the maintenance department of Sumter Regional Hospital. He was a loving husband and devoted father of six children.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Ramona Bach Jones; by a son, O.C. Jones Jr; grandson, Kenneth Hutchins; great-grandson, Jonathan Strickland; infant great-grandsons Mason and Jerrod; four brothers: Russel, James, Sam, and Howard; and four sisters: Mae, Rosalee, Karlene, and Patricia.
Survivors include one son, Richard Jones (Cathy) of Tupelo, Miss.; four daughters: Lyda Brenner (Richard) of San Antonio, Texas, Marilyn Eagle (Eddie) of Calera, Ala., Lori Adams (Wayne) of Ellaville, Ga., and Robin Oliver (Timothy) of Canton, Ga.; January Jones (special caregiver and granddaughter) and her children: Brittany Anderson, Michael K. Underwood Jr., and Lexie Underwood; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
