Americus-Sumter Air Rifle Team qualifies for state sectionals

LEESBURG, GA – The Americus-Sumter High School Air Rifle Team finished in fifth place at the Area 2 Air Rifle Championships on Thursday, March 14, at Lee County High School. As a result, the Panthers qualify for the State Riflery Sectional Playoffs. This is the first time in school history that the ASHS Air Rifle Team has qualified for state sectionals.
The Panthers will take part in the state sectionals on Saturday, March 29, at North Paulding High School in Dallas, GA.
According to the ASHS Air Rifle head coach, Seth Howell, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) shoots in a Three Position 3 x 10 format. “Those three positions are prone, standing and kneeling,” Howell said. There were 12 teams at the Area 2 Air Rifle Championships. Tift County came out on top with a team score of 1119. Wilcox County finished in second place with a team score of 1114. Third-place finishers Lee County finished with a team score of 1101, followed by Worth County (1074), Americus-Sumter (1061), Turner County (1059), Colquitt County (1057), Cairo (1034), Irwin County (1028), Westover (992), Crisp County (958) and Dougherty County (925).
“Our fifth-place finish qualified the team to advance to the state playoffs and earned the team a trophy,” Howell said. “This match was also sanctioned by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), who awarded Safaria Carson and Tiffany Williams Silver CMP badges.” Howell went on to say that Tymia Williams, Ally Bozeman and Courtney Coley were each awarded Bronze CMP badges.
