Schley Family Connection updates projects

These are updates from the Schley County Family Connection.

• John Greene has received $5,000 grant for the Ellaville Senior Center to purchase a commercial stove and fire suppression exhaust head.
• The Cool Kids Café received a grant of $6,500 for to purchase a new stove, refrigerator, and cooking supplies for their classroom at Schley County Middle and High School.
  • Community’s Heart to Heart, formerly No Tears for Christmas, received a grant for $5,000 to purchase equipment and supplies for five programs for families and children in Marion County.
• The collaborative distributed pinwheels, pencils, and fact sheets to pre-k, kindergarten and first-grade students at Schley County Elementary School and to all Head Start students in Marion, Schley, and Webster counties during April, Child Abuse Prevention Month.
• The collaborative assisted Students Against Destructive Decisions in ordering t-shirt.
• A fundraiser was conducted to purchase three laptop computers for the 2019 Valedictorian, Salutatorian and STAR Student at Schley County High School.
• There will be two Summer Cafe Programs this year at Schley
  County High School and the John Lewis Resource Center for children to eat free regardless of income.
• John has purchased a new desktop computer and printer for his office.

 

Art street light banner contest winners announced

The Schley Community Foundation sponsored an Art Contest for the street light banners. Artists were invited to paint banners with the theme “Celebrating Community Past and Present History.” Entries were judged at Ralwins’ Art Gallery, downtown Ellaville, by Yorka Ralwins, Nancy McMath Young, and Todd Lunneborg.

The Grand Champion was Ginger Bass of Schley County. She teaches art at Schley County Middle High School. She chose as her subject, an Ellaville native who has gained prominence as a song writer and singer, Caylee Hammack. The information on the back of the banner reads “Noted as an artist to watch in the music industry, Ellaville native Caylee Hammack proudly represents her hometown with clever song writing and a powerhouse voice.”

Voted the Most Artistic was Eva Clark ‘s painting of “Little Billy” chugging through LaCrosse back when two-car trains traveled from Americus to Columbus every day, passing through Ellaville.

The second Most Artistic was from Ellaville. Annette Reynolds painted an impressive banner of the historic Schley County Courthouse.

The Most Original and Creative was Juan David Ruiz Velez, an artist from Smyrna. He painted an interesting combination of an open book, a peach tree with roots and limbs entwined with historic structures.
The second Most Original and Creative Banner was painted by Nick Coogle of Americus. It showed a woman in a stage coach window winking at the artist and the theme tells of the route through Pond Town as early as 1900.

Artists competing ranged from age 9 to 85. They came from Macon, Schley, Sumter, and Webster counties with a couple from Smyrna, and one from Louisiana.

Those that submitted entries, not including the five winners, were Kaitlin Arrington, Lindsey Arrington, Wendy Clayton, Morgan Kirby, Sean Alex Lovegrove, Sheila Nagle, Margaret Smith, Nicole Marie Oengo Torres, Anna Trussell, and Letitia Williams.

 

Ellaville Rainbow Garden Club celebrates Garden Week
The Ellaville Rainbow Garden Club shared three lovely arrangements of flowers that were placed in the Ellaville City Center, The Peoples Bank, and the Schley County Library.

The Garden Club did to help celebrate Garden Week in Georgia April 21-17. They planted flowers in buckets.

 

Springtime Ellaville again a success

Springtime Ellaville, sponsored by the Ellaville-Schley County Chamber of Commerce, was held XXX in downtown Ellaville.

There were many vendors and the rain held off which made it a great day.

Confederate Railroad keyboardist Joey Recker played and everyone enjoyed his music. Craig “Shug” Shugart played the drums and Lee Pilcher also played. This was the entertainment throughout the day.

They had a Bingo this year. The Art Contest brought a lot of people into town. Everyone went around the City Park and sidewalks to see the Art Contest banners. All art entries were hung on the street lights downtown.

There many activities for children and adults.
