Lisa Greene — new GED instructor for Ellaville-Schley County

Lisa Greene has been named the new GED instructor for Ellaville-Schley County beginning Aug. 1. The community is very proud to support her in this position made possible through South Georgia Technical College and the city of Ellaville.

GED classes are held in the Ellaville City Center next door to the Ellaville City Hall.

 

 

Schley County Family Connection has announcements
John Greene, coordinator of Schley County Family Connection, reports on the following activities.

He met with Harley Calhoun, new principal at Schley County Middle-High School, and invited him to speak at the next Family Connection meeting at noon Aug. 22 at Ellaville Baptist Church.

The Summer Cafe at Schley County High School and the John Lewis Resource Center ended recently. Greene checked with John Lewis Resource Center on July 23, and they had served 55 children that day. Schley County High School had served about 100 meals per day doing football camp.

Thanks to the school supply donors and Americus Walmart. The Family Connection was able to purchase $500 in school supplies this year which will be donated to Schley County Elementary School and the Making a Difference in Ellaville (M.A.D.E.) to be distributed to children from low-income families.

The Family Connection is waiting for the results of a $6,200 grant application for Kool Kids Café, a program for special needs students at Schley County Middle and High School, which will be used to purchase a new refrigerator, stove, other cooking equipment and supplies for their classroom.

The Family Connection will submit a $5,000 grant application this month or Deep South Canine Rescue Inc. to purchase additional housing, food, supplies, equipment, and a microchip reader. Deep South is a 501-C-3, no0kill rescue shelter for dogs located in Schley County.

Greene reports that the work of local Family Connection collaboratives in Georgia continues to show positive impact as Georgia’s rank increased to 38th in the nation for overall child well-being, according to the most recent results from the Annie B. Casey Foundation. New Mexico, Louisiana, and Mississippi all have the lowest respective ranks for children’s well-being.

Schley County Schools bell rang out again

The Schley County School bells rang in the new school year on Friday.

There are so many special things happening this year, with all new leadership. Brian Hall is the new Schley County Schools Superintendent Brian Hall. Harley Calhoun is new Middle-High
School principal. Gabe Theiss is the new assistant principal at the Middle/High School. Tee Reddish is the new principal at Schley County Elementary School, and Anne Marie DeVane is assistant principal at the elementary school.

New teachers in the school system include Melanie Allen and Marissa Cerrone, both at Schley County Elementary School; and Rachel Brunson, Rachel Calhoun, Hollie B. Crook, Laura Freund, Ginger Gilpin, Stephen Smith, and Tina Williams at Schley County Middle-High School.

 

Ellaville-Schley Historical board meets

The Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society board met July 23 at the Schley County Courthouse.

The meeting was called to order by Nancy McMath Young and opened with prayer by Larry Wall.

The minutes were read and the treasurer’s reports were given. The upcoming auction, the organization’s biggest fundraiser, was discussed. The auction will be held Sept. 14 at the Thomas Edwin Wall Post 191 American Legion. Live entertainment begins at 5 p.m. and the auction starts at 7 p.m. A barbecue supper is served during the entertainment and auction. To-go plates will also be available.

There will be also be Bake Sale, and a raffle for a lovely, handmade quilt. Tickets are $1 each, available at the Ellaville Floral Shop, Gill’s Drugs, and The Pizza Place. The drawing for the quilt will be held the night of the auction.

Everyone can make a donation to the auction, and when your item comes up for bids, the auctioneer will announce who donated the item. All donations are tax deductible. You don’t have to be a member to make a donation to the auction.
