Arts in Rees Park celebrates 21st year

AMERICUS — Imagine a fun-filled day of glassblowing, ceramics, puppet shows, storytelling, live music, face-painting, children’s activities and games, and food, glorious food! From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 the Americus Sumter Council Arts Council will host its 21st annual “Arts in Rees Park,” sponsored by Georgia Council for the Arts, Century 21, Miller Auto Parts, Farmer’s Seed and Feed, and the City of Americus.

In the gazebo, Time Warp Orchestra of Atlanta will perform as well as the Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Theater Arts Department. Also from Atlanta, Piccadilly Puppets and Barry Stewart Mann, storyteller, will delight families with puppetry arts and “A World of Stories.”

Devan Cole of The Hot Glass Academy will demonstrate glassblowing and the GSW Art Department will exhibit art and educate children in ceramics and guide them in creating small bowls.

The artist market includes a quick sketch artist, ceramics, jewelry arts, quilts, ornaments, baked goods, abstract art, screen prints, collages, silver, pop art, dolls, bookmarks, tiny paintings, and more. Artists include Brita Hobbs, Michelle Scott, Tonya McDonald, Richard Scarborough, Sunni Zemblowski, Charles Davis, Deer Park Aviary, Grateful Threads, Hanna Ezzo, Allie Luten, Krafty Kreations, Marnie Eason, Coleen Farmer, Emma King, Abstract Foil, and Suzanne Doble.

Americus-Sumter High School, Furlow Charter School, and Southland Academy will compete in the High School Art Competition, and everyone is invited to register for the Sidewalk Art Competition. Sumter County Middle School STEM Class, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Americus Fire & Emergency Services, Americus Kiwanis Club, The Humane Society, Furlow Charter School, and Rotaract will also set up booths. Children games include the sack race, the three-legged race, and the egg and spoon race.

Lunch is also on the menu because there will be fabulous food from Big Willy’s Seafood  of Albany, Habanero Grill from Atlanta, Small Cakes from Albany, Pat’s Place Pizza, Perry Wellness Center Burgers and Dogs, Kristy’s Cotton Candy, fried pickles and Oreos, Annie & Sisters Fair Food (funnel cakes, kettle corn, boiled peanuts, bloomin’ onions) and Americus Snoball and Shaved Ice.
