ELLAVILLE – The Schley County Varsity Girls Basketball Team (SCHS) jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter and continued to dominate from then on out on their way to a 60-22 victory over the Sherwood Christian Academy Lady Eagles (SCA) on Tuesday, December 12, at Schley County High School.
“I thought this was our most complete game of the season so far,” SCHS Head Coach Brent Moore said. “We played well in every facet of the game. I couldn’t be more proud of the effort tonight! I hope we can build off this game and continue to get better.”
The Lady Wildcats had four players score in double figures. Payton Goodin led SCHS in scoring with 16 points, Emma Walker had 14, Jamesen Holloman scored 12 and Daneria Thornton chipped in 10 in the winning cause.
The Lady Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to start the game and that run was capped off with a jump shot from Lily Walker. Over the next couple of minutes, SCHS outscored the Lady Eagles 6-2 to take an 11-2 lead before SCA called timeout with 2:37 left in the first quarter.
Over the next few minutes, the Lady Wildcats outscored SCA 5-2 and took a 16-4 lead by the quarter’s end.
Over the first few minutes of the second quarter, SCHS limited the Lady Eagle’s offense with good half-court defense and forced turnovers. This enabled the Lady Wildcats to expand their lead, as they would score points in transition, as well as in their half court offense. By halftime, SCHS was firmly in command with a 40-6 lead.
The second half was much like the first, as the Lady Wildcats were able to score on the inside and out. On the defensive end, they continued to limit the Lady Eagles’ chances to score. By the time the horn sounded to end the game, SCHS had earned a 60-22 victory.
Sarah Federick led the Lady Eagles in scoring with seven points.
The Lady Wildcats (4-1) will try to extend their winning streak to five games when they host Chattahoochee County on Friday, December 15, at 6 p.m.
