Letia Greene, a 13-year-old student at Sumter Intermediate School, was found
deceased at 320 Arch Helms Road. She was last seen on the 23rd at 3:00 p.m. Her
bicycle was found in a field around a half mile from her home, and her body was later
discovered in a pond adjacent to the field by the Sumter County Dive and Rescue Team.
While the pond is obscured from view from the street by brush and wisteria vines, a
boat is visible from the road, as well as overflow from the pond site. Police tape,
recently broken, marks the entry to the field, as well as a spot at the top of the hill where
her bicycle was initially discovered. The Sherrif’s office reports that the investigation is
still active, but does not suspect foul play. Sumter County Coroner Clifford Walton
reported that the body will be sent to the crime lab in Macon, but could not comment on
whether or not there was foul play at this time.
