The sweltering heat did not stop Correll Dowdell and Jarod Lewis from putting on a Back to School drive at Reese Park on Sunday afternoon.

Both Dowdell and Lewis are two former Sumter County High School football players.

“This is something that me and Correll Dowdell put together,” Lewis said. “We just thought about doing something nice for the kids and for the community….giving away cleats, giving away free school supplies, water, providing the jumping castle for the kids to have fun while being out here….just a bunch of positivity for this Sunday. We want Sunday to be fun day.”

Dowdell stated that the community needs something good to happen considering the things that have been going on. “With the state that Americus is in right now, we’re just trying to do something that will uplift the community and to show kids that you don’t need a big corporation or a big organization behind you to make anything possible,” Dowdell said.

There will be other Back to School drives in the community in the upcoming weeks, as the beginning of the school year draws near.
