Over the first five innings of the contest between the Southland Academy Raiders (SAR) and the visiting John Milledge Academy Trojans (JMA), it was a back-and-forth affair between both teams. However, JMA scored four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh and handed the Raiders a 13-6 loss on Tuesday, August 6 at the Southland Academy softball complex.
“I was proud of them. We competed for a while. Unfortunately, the errors and walks caught up to us. We’ve got to clean that up,” SAR Head Coach Blaze Hargrove said. “If we do that, we’re going to be all right. Offensively, I’m very proud of the way we get in there and compete. We’re putting runs up. We’ve just got to limit them (the other team).”
Going into the top of the sixth inning, the Raiders only trailed 6-5, but the Trojans were able to score four runs on two hits and took advantage of three walks. The big blow of the inning came off the bat of Kaydee Griffin, who hit a two-run double to give the Trojans a 10-5 lead.
The Raiders tried to respond in the bottom of the sixth and were able to score a run when Ila Johnson reached on an error that allowed Adler Rae Owens to score, but JMA would add three more runs in the top of the seventh and would go on to win by the score of 13-6.
The Trojans struck first in the top of the first inning with two runs on two hits and took advantage of an error, but the Raiders responded in the bottom of the second with three runs on an RBI single by Maggie Levie and they took advantage of a walk and two errors committed by the Trojans.
JMA regained the lead in the top of the fourth by scoring two runs on a hit and taking advantage of three SAR errors, but the Raiders countered in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on a two-run triple by Ila Johnson, making the score 5-4 in favor of SAR.
The Trojans responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead and would later take control of the game with four runs in the top of the sixth.
Adler Rae Owens led the SAR offense by going 2 for 4 at the plate and Ila Johnson went 1 for 4 with a two-run triple.
Riley McRee got the start in the circle for the Raiders. She gave up four runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts over five innings of work.
Kinley McLemore led the JMA offense by going 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored and Addie Latimer got the start in the circle for the Trojans. She gave up six runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts in a little over six innings of work.
The Raiders (0-2) will try to earn their first win of the season when they travel to Windsor Academy on Thursday, August 8. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
