Dianne Brown, church member at Maranatha Baptist church and executive assistant for investigations at the Sheriff’s office, recalls assisting with Carter’s Sunday school class. “Miss Jan Williams was the one who pretty much organized the people getting in, getting seated, so I was kind of like her assistant. I helped her with all that. So it was it was quite an experience and meeting different people and then getting them up in the line to take their photos with the Carters.”
Brown described the first time she came to his class as a visitor: “I think my first Sunday there was on an Easter Sunday. And I was just amazed at the crowd. And after the first couple of visits there, I knew I wanted to join the church. And it didn’t have anything to do with the fact that Mr. Carter was, was the teacher. It was just, I felt at home at that church. I felt comfortable and so I’ve been a member there now for gosh, I bet 10-12 years.”
Brown shared her impression of Carter’s lessons. “His Sunday school classes were always very informative. He knows his Bible. He knows his Bible inside and out, and he is a true man of faith.”
She shared one trait of the Carters that left an impression on her. “One of the things that I admire most about Mr. and Mrs. Carter was, is their faith, and not only do they talk the talk but they walk the walk. And he shared his experiences with people, and he’s brought numerous people to Christ, and that was just very admirable to me.”
When asked if any particular Sunday school lesson made an impression, Brown replied: “They were all very touching.”
She also gave her personal impressions of Carter. “He was just a down to earth person. He was just like anybody else. I mean, when we had our church conferences, you know, when you sit at the same table with him and carry on a conversation, and Mrs. Carter was always interested in my job, and what I do and how things were going at work.”
Brown talked about how people reacted when they first saw Carter. “A lot of people were just like, overjoyed just to see him.” She shared the reactions of visitors. “Sometimes, they were just like beside themselves.” She mentioned some were entirely overwhelmed. “We had people cry when he walked in.”
Brown shared her own interactions with him as a congregant in the same church. “To me, he’s always just been a person. I mean, I never really looked at him as being anybody famous. He was just Mr. Carter, and he was my Sunday school teacher.”
She shared another memory of the Carters. “One of the things I do remember him telling us is that he had Miss Rosalynn read their Bible daily together, and that you never go to bed mad at your spouse.”
Brown shared a final impression. “They were wonderful people, are wonderful people, and admired and I’ve always thought it to be a pleasure to be able to attend church and Sunday school with the Carters and with the whole entire church family.”
