November 1rst’s First Friday theme was Flash Back Friday. At The Spot, artists were busy creating works for a silent auction. Owner Yorka Rawlins told how proceeds would be split between the artists and the Sumter County Humane Society.
Sunshine Lockhart, a student at Sumter County Highschool, gave an interview about her art piece. “I’m painting a sunset. It’s definitely in the works right now, but I’m hoping it will turn out better. I haven’t painted in quite a couple years.” She told how her mom had told her about the event, prompting her to come.
Another artist, Mae Thurston, told how her theme was suggested by her daughter. “She said a lot of people around here like to come and see flamenco dancers, so she said paint one for them just in case someone wanted to buy it.”
She told how since April, she had been coming from northeast Macon and doing painting parties one Sunday a month, though she mentioned an injury in September had slowed her down. Thurston stated she had painted most of her life. “I worked at a fine arts magnet school, and then I ran an art gallery in Macon for about seven years.”
When asked what was the most challenging part of the work, Thurston replied; “People. I’m working on their bodies as I go along. I have to adjust them as I go. I’ve taken portrait classes, but it’s been years since I did that, so it was just going back and trying to remember everything I was taught.” She told how she enjoyed the work despite the challenge. “I love painting.”
A furnace was burning bright and hot at Mobile Glass Studios. A disco ball speckled the scene while an old Disney film, Fantasia, played on the wall. Phil Vinson showed off the gallery, highlighting a variety of glass ornaments and paintings.
Minnie Clark told how she was enjoying Flashback Friday, giving The Spot as her favorite part. The told what she liked about it the most; “the atmosphere and everything. It’s real nice.”
Kenny Phillips told how Scoops was celebrating First Friday. “We agreed to do 70s era and give out some discounts. We’re giving away 10% discounts on all purchases tonight, along with free toppings for every ice cream purchase.”
Phillips told how they were prepared for the party. “We’re ready. All we just need is the people to flock in.”
