SAN CARLOS, Calif. — Eleanor Fort Shike completed life’s journey on Dec. 29, 2014, in San Carlos, Calif.; she was 88 years old.
Mrs. Shike was born Jan. 11, 1926 in Americus, Sumter County, Ga., the daughter of John Allen Fort and Nancy Jane Hanna of Americus. She passed away of natural causes shortly after celebrating Christmas with her family.
She is survived by her sons, John Wesley Shike of San Mateo, Calif., and Thomas Andrew Shike of Helsingborg, Sweden; granddaughters, Jenny Amanda Shike and Samantha Eleanor Shike in Sweden and sister Jane Fort Manning of Toronto, Canada.
Mrs. Shike graduated from Americus High School, studied liberal arts at Georgia Southwestern College, and graduated from the University of Kentucky. After working briefly as a radio commentator in Atlanta, she became the assistant to James Pike, Dean of Saint John the Divine, New York, and then, executive secretary to Jules Joskow, president and chairman of the board of National Economic Research Center.
She was a beloved mother, devoted member of the Episcopal Church and proud American, as she comes back home to Americus.
Memorial is to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Church of the Holy Trinity, East 88th New York, N.Y., and at Calvary Episcopal Church in Americus, Ga.
