VALLEY, Ala. – Despite having to default a doubles match and two singles matches due to a rash of illness and injury throughout their roster, the Georgia Southwestern women’s tennis team persevered against Point University on March 6 and pulled out a 5-4 victory. The men lost 5-4 to the Skyhawks.

Both GSW programs return to Peach Belt Conference play on March 8 against Francis Marion.

GSW WOMEN 5, POINT UNIVERSITY 4

Carly Cangelosi was solid at the top of the lineup for GSW. Cangelosi paired with Jamie Thomas for the first time this season and won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles before she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles.

Lauren Resnick and Ashley Denby moved up to play in the highest positions they have all season and the ladies did not disappoint. The duo won 8-5 playing at No. 2 doubles for the first time this year. Resnick proceeded to win at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Denby was victorious at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

The Lady Hurricanes improved their record to 3-8 overall while Point fell to 2-2.

GSW MEN 4, POINT UNIVERSITY 5

Abel Acuna-Moreno picked up a pair of victories for the Hurricanes. Acuna-Moreno partnered with Oliver Marshall to win 8-2 at No. 2 doubles before he rolled past Zach Sheeler at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Jake Koonce won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles over Rafa Hewett. Steven Blythe won his singles match at No. 3 against Ben Markowski, 6-3, 6-2.

The decisive team point came down to No. 5 singles. It was the only match to go to a third set. Andrew Hays from Point edged out Andrew Greneker, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The GSW men drop to 2-8 this spring. Point improved to 5-1.
